One of the things that excite me about Salem Evangelical Church is our commitment to showing love to our neighbors and our world. His Homes is one of the ways our church body has chosen to show God’s love in a tangible way.

SEC owns several homes next to our campus that has been designated for single-parent families who have been dealt a difficult hand in life. Each amazing family has a unique situation and story. And as the body of Christ, we have come alongside them to help provide affordable housing, answering the question, “Where are my kiddos and I going to live while we get back on our feet?” We also make available additional spiritual, financial, and physical growth opportunities to help these families rebound and ultimately thrive.

I am excited to tell you that we have recently had a His Homes graduate! Here’s their story in their own words. “After my divorce, I couldn’t get approved for a home loan because my debt to income ratio was too high. His Homes provided us not only a stable, super affordable place to live, but it also provided me time. But now, I’m buying a house! I would like to take this opportunity to share just how grateful I am for the support of Salem EC through the His Homes program for the last 4 years. Through this opportunity, I have been able to work and save to make homeownership a reality. God has been so faithful in his provision for us over and over again. And providing a home to call our own is just his latest gift.”

I’ve been the His Homes facilitator for a couple of years now, working as a liaison between the renters, church office, and Trustees. It has been great to get to know these church family members beyond more than just a passing “hello” on Sundays. And I’d like to invite you to be a part of this program, too. We have two volunteer opportunities, and this is where you come in!

First, our rental agreement with these families states that SEC will provide a voluntary encourager. As I read this, I thought about the adopted grandparents I had growing up — a couple who showed our family love, prayed for us, invited us over for dinner, and came to my band concerts. Someone to just be a friend. I am looking for eight couples, each to be matched with one His Homes family for encouragement and connection.

Second, as with any home, there can be maintenance issues. I am looking for folks who are willing and able to help trim shrubs, fix a leaky toilet, troubleshoot a funny squeak under the hood of the car or provide advice on other typical home maintenance tasks. You don’t have to be a contractor or an engineer, just someone who loves to tinker and fix stuff.

If one of these roles sounds interesting to you, please let me know. You can send me an email here: I’d love to have you join in this exciting opportunity to get to know some more of the SEC family.
